“If you discipline yourself to make your mind self-sufficient you will thereby be least vulnerable to injury from the outside” –
Critias of Athens
It has been widely believed that self-sufficiency is a characteristic that a person in born with. That it is a trait that an individual either has or does not, and if they don’t then they never will because it’s simply not in them.
Yet from the quote above quote we are made to understand that you discipline yourself in order to make your mind self-sufficient. We get that self-sufficiency is a skill that we can and should learn. We get that we can train ourselves to further make ourselves not vulnerable to external injury.
It has further been made evident that when the inside has all the assurance it needs and has established a certain self-sufficiency from within, then it is very difficult for outside influence/opinion/negativity to penetrate.
